On June 19, 2013, it was announced that the film will be released in 2019 by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by 20th Century Fox.
On April 16, 2014, Trey Parker, Seth Rogen, John C. Reilly, John Scarce, Daniel Keem and Bill Murray joined the voice cast.
the film was scheduled to be released on December 22, 2017.
But in June 2016, it was moved down to July 14, 2017.
On July 13, 2016, it was announced that Will Forte, Tom Hanks, Dwayne Johnson, Adam Sandlerand Bill Murray will be actors.
On August 17, 2016, Fox pushed back the release date to July 12, 2019, and because of negotiations with NBCUniversal/Comcast's impending acquisition of DreamWorks Animation.
The distribution rights to the film transferred from Fox to Universal Pictures in 2019.
