While scavenging for food, Milo the arctic fox (Kevin James) enters the cave of Bruno the Rattlesnake (Martin Short), his only friend who has a large wagon full of human food taken from a nearby rest stop. Milo accidentally wakes Bruno from his hibernation, and in a race to escape, causes the stash to roll out onto the nearby highway and get run over. To avoid being eaten himself, Milo promises Bruno that he will completely replace the stash within the week.
Milo heads towards a recently-built human suburban housing development in Montana, surrounded a forest glade separated from the rest of the development by a large fence. There, he discovers a pack of animals recently awoken from their hibernation, led by Beau the hedgehog (Rob Corddry); the others include the chipmunk Percy (Jack McBrayer), the Badger Debra (Maya Rudolph), the Rabbits Ellie (Helena Bonham Carter) and Hal (Stephen Root), along with their triplet sons, Max (Pamela Adlon), Toothy (Sam Lavagnino) and Cera (Hadley Belle Miller), and the Otters Henry (Albert Brooks) and his 15 year-old daughter Alice (Selena Gomez). The animals are scared as the development had been build during their hibernation and fear they won't be able to forage for food in the small glade, but Milo shows them the amount of food that humans consume and waste and convinces them to help them steal food to replace Bruno's stash. Beau is hesitant but the other animals are awed by Milo's knowledge and the taste of human food as well as other human indulgences. They make bold attempts to steal food directly from the humans.
When the animals raid the trash cans of the real estate agent Susan Wilder (Kathy Griffin), she calls in an animal exterminator Stan Ostrum (Bruce Campbell), who offers to install a highly lethal trap called the Super Mega Trapper Laser 4000 , which is illegal in every state but Rhode Island, in her backyard. Beau sees this and tries to warn the others, but Milo insists they will be okay. Fearing for the safety of the animal pack, Beau attempts to return what they stole; he and Milo get into an argument that ends up causing a small rampage through the development and destroying all of the stash Milo had collected for Bruno. RJ rallies the others to raid Wilder's home directly on the night before a large party. With Debra disguised as a dog to distract Wilder's pet spanish accent chihuahua, Diego (Carlos Alazraqui), the others enter Wilder's home and collect all the food. The next morning, they are discovered by Wilder who calls Stan. Milo manages to escape with the food for Bruno but leaves the other animals to be trapped by Stan.
As Milo returns the food to Bruno, he sees Ostrum's truck drive by on the road, and decides to use the food to knock the truck off the road, enraging Bruno. Stan is knocked out while the animals get free and Max, Teethy and Cera use video game skills to drive the truck back to the development. Beau is happy to see milo again but the others aren't since he abounded then. However, Milo explains that he was always alone and just wanted their help to replace Bruno's stash and he didn't mean to left them behind and get captured so he came back to save them. Beginning to understand that Milo really did came back to save them, the animals decide to let him in and drive the truck back to the neighborhood, crashing through Wilder's home, destroying everything in the process, and the animals flee to the woods. Susan and Stan converge on the animals from one side while Bruno tries to swipe at them from the other. To escape, Milo gives Percy a caffeinated beverage, allowing the hyperactive chipmunk to move incredibly fast. Percy is able to manipulate Stan into capturing Bruno, causing Bruno, Susan, and Stan to be trapped by the Super Mega Trapper Laser 4000 in Wilder's backyard while the animals escape to the woods. The police arrive and send Bruno to the Mount Everst while Susan and Stan are arrested for using the Super Mega Tapper Laser 4000.
Milo is a hero and is brought into the group as part of the family, as well as Diego, who became infatuated with Debra even after learning she was a Badger. Beau then realizes they haven't had a chance to forage for food until Percy reveals that while sped up, he had been able to collect enough nuts for them all to last the year.
