The Bear Necessities (Japanese: ベア必需 Bea hitsuju) is the thirty-seventh episode of the first season of Scooby-Doo: The Next Mystery.


The gang is on a school camping out into the woods when a giant killer bear goes on a rampage and a cult of worshippers who claim to be angels sent by the bear god Kumashka try to stop Mystery Inc. from solving the mystery. Meanwhile a pair of seemingly abandoned twin bear cubs imprints on Scooby-Doo.

  • The episode is similar to the 1976 horror film Grizzly, which is also about a giant man-eating bear terrorizing a National Forest.
  • The Giant Killer Bear's appearance is very similar to the Bear from The Fox and the Hound.
  • Through it's credited that Frank Welker voiced the Giant Killer Bear, additional sounds were from archival recordings from Thurl Ravenscroft (original voice of Tony the Tiger), James MacDonald (former voice of Mickey Mouse), Candy Candido (miscellaneous voices in Disney movies and attractions), and Clarence Nash (original voice of Donald Duck).
  • Yogi Bear and Boo-Boo Bear makes a cameo appearance stealling Shaggy and Scooby's "pic-a-nic basket".
  • Running Gag: Scrappy is mistaken for a bear cub.
  • The Giant Killer Bear's roars are a mix of Grizzly Bear growls, Black Bear growls, and Polar Bear growls.
  • Kumashka is a fictional God, made up for the show. However, the Bear Worshippers are inspired by the Ainu tribe of Hokkaido.
